HireVue Secures Funding Anchored by Peterson Ventures

Funding will accelerate international growth and product innovation

SALT LAKE CITY, Utah – (Business Wire) September 28, 2009 – HireVue, the leading provider of video interviewing solutions, announced today that it has secured a Series A round of funding led by Peterson Ventures. Peterson Ventures is joined by The Garber Fund of Penn State University and a number of strategic investors to help fund HireVue’s continuing growth.

In the past 12 months, HireVue has experienced greater than 500% growth in interviews and expanded their customer base to include a number of the Fortune 500 including Dish Network, CDW, and Murphy Oil. HireVue also recently announced a key strategic partnership that makes their video interviewing solutions available to thousands of employers through talent management software giant Taleo. HireVue was also named HR Product of the Year for 2009 by Human Resource Executive ® magazine just two weeks ago.

“This is a great time to invest in HireVue,” said Brandon Cope of Peterson Ventures. “It’s exciting to partner with a company in this stage of explosive growth. They provide an offering that is quite compelling for employers given the advancement in technology, the globalization of business, and the downturn of the economy.  We believe HireVue will create value for the world’s leading organizations by helping them acquire their most important asset—their people—in the shortest amount of time and at the lowest cost.”

Employers use HireVue to screen candidates with Virtual Video Interviews where the employer defines a set of questions that are answered by the candidate over the Internet via webcam. Clients also use HireVue’s Live Video Interviews to interview candidates via online videoconference. Both types of interviews are recorded and stored in HireVue’s proprietary and secure system for review. Interviews can be taken from any location with an Internet connection and many employers set up on-site video kiosks for high volume hiring. Webcams and technical support are included with every video interview. The HireVue solution can be used directly from www.hirevue.com or through the newly announced integration with Taleo Enterprise.

HireVue will use the new funds to add to its world-class management team, strengthen market awareness, and make product enhancements that will greatly increase the value of the HireVue system to the market.

“We are fortunate to have Peterson Ventures and the Garber Fund as partners,” says HireVue CEO Mark Newman. “All of our investment partners offer much more than capital. In the few short months of partnership, their entrepreneurial know-how, expertise in the human capital space, and experience in building great companies, has already proven crucial to our recent growth and will continue be a catalyst to our future growth.”

Exciting News from HireVue

September is going to be a huge month for HireVue. It started earlier this week with the announcement that Fortune 500 company DISH Network has selected HireVue as it’s Video Interviewing provider of choice.

HireVue is also now a Taleo Partner and is pre-integrated with Taleo so it’s very easy to activate and this morning we announced that HireVue is available through Taleo’s brand new Solution Exchange – so it’s now super easy for Taleo customers to review the solution before they decide to activate it. We’re the only video interviewing provider available through Taleo Solution Exchange.

I’ve been spearheading this integration pretty much since I joined the company. Taleo has been awesome to work with and I think all the hard work will pay off for our customers. It’s a phenomenal solution and will be enormously valuable to Taleo customers. One of the best things about designing software is when you have the chance to step back from your work and take a look at it from a different perspective to find that it “just works” really well. For those of you who aren’t aware of Solution Exchange, you need to check it out. This is the future of integrated SaaS HR software delivery.

Be Yourself LinkedIn – Don’t be Facebook

LinkedIn,

You have been with us since before Facebook and even MySpace I believe. You are on www.linkedin.com and are a trusted source for professional friends to reconnect and for people to network with new colleagues. Your tabs are simple and straightforward. Your layout is plain and clean. You can go to the site and find exactly what you are looking for, just like you have been for years. I heard the news on Techcrunch and immediately proceeded to see if what was said is true.

LinkedInSo why are you trying to keep up with the kids? Is it a mid-life crisis Linkedin? Since you are a website and cannot buy a new corvette (I’m sure Mr. Hoffman could spring for a new top of line blade server though) do you have to change your look and feel so that there is no differentiation between you and Facebook? Is it the flip flops you want? The Google programmers? What?

I don’t come to you looking for games and drunken party photos. I come to you for professionalism and opportunities to grow my reputation. You have helped me build HireVue and our video interview system immensely over the years through referrals and leads and I hate to see you let yourself go like this. Mid-life crises are not good – they generally do not turn out well as we all know. What can we do to bring you back?

Please let us know LinkedIn. You are a true friend and always there for us when we need you. Now we want to be there for you.

Sincerely

Mark Newman and the HireVue team

To quote from the article – “While still in the nascent stage, video interviews are growing in popularity. HireVue.com, a market leader, has seen business skyrocket in recent months, and employer inquiries are snowballing,“…..”Clients such as Thorpe are already sold. This year, he selected his interns using video alone. “In 10 years, most hires will include a video interview stage,” he predicts.

Dave Lefkow – Why Shouldn’t Be Afraid of Video Resumes (and video interviews)

Dave wrote an excellent article about video in the hiring process on ERE.

Dave LefkowSince moving on from Jobster it looks like he is doing some consulting and I would have to say that there aren’t many better people out there to help you figure out your HR/Recruiting needs.

An article on video resumes, video interviews and HireVue from ERE

Thanks for the love Raghav!

Raghav Singh

We ourselves have been trying to figure out the best way to summarize the difference between “us” and “them” (i.e. video resumes) and Raghav hits it right on the head when me talks about structured vs. unstructured.

Time Magazine: Video Resumes, Video Interviews and Complexes

Guess what! Time Magazine has written an article about video in the hiring process!

A number of great companies were covered in the article, notably HIREVUE, Vault.com, YouTube, Jobster, 62ndview (get it, it took me a while – funny huh, from RecuitTV) and ResumeVideo. Supposedly they are all broadly launching this Spring!
Here’s the article – “It’s a Wrap. You’re Hired!

Jason Goldberg blogged about it too.

The article was great (of course we would love to see a feature about how we are trying to take over the video interviewing world and have been doing it for a couple of years) and we look forward to more articles about the space, especially about video interviews.

One thing though that Lisa found and wrote about in her blog which we know already about video resumes:

As research for this article I just wrote on the rise of the video résumé, I set out to create my own. When I started reporting, I had assumed there must be a whole cottage industry of videographers, makeup artists and editors making hey of this surging new trend. Sure enough, when I Googled it, I came up with dozens of companies offering their services.

But when I started calling, I found most were out of business.

One videographer who advertised video résumé-making services on his website picked up the phone. Eric Wolfram started to laugh as soon as I explained my mission. He put his website up in 2004, he says. Since then, he’s had exactly no calls–that is, except for the five in the past few months, all from journalists wanting to do stories on video résumés

Thanks Lisa Cullen at TIME!! You’re a star in our book!!

SEO Competition always makes me laugh – Google vs Yahoo

I am building a company information finder/database for our candidates (the smart ones) to use as a reference and I came across a very funny thing in the age old (about 5 years) battle between search kings.

Search Engine Optimization wars always make me chuckle. I’m sure this is too egregious but if you look up the term “Company Information” on Google, look what the third link is!

YAHOO!!! – Brings you straight to their corporate information page.

I have a feeling that wasn’t naturally done but you never know.
HireVue is trying to do more SEO type of work on our websites as it is amazing the conversion we have in natural search.

Yes I find simple small things funny and this sure got me. I know, I need a life.
