“The passport integration between HireVue and Taleo was critical for us. With a centralized recruiting function working with candidates and hiring managers from all over the world, we needed a very unique solution. It had to give us the ability to provide detailed candidate information to managers, collect their feedback, and make immediate hiring decisions. Our Taleo platform with HireVue’s video interviewing capability was the only solution we found that made this possible.”
- Lorna Hagen, Dow Jones

“I have utilized video interviewing throughout my career, but had not been exposed to a web-based video interviewing solution quite like HireVue. Video is only one part of their solution. Hiring decisions are much easier with their robust toolset, and the Taleo integration means they will happen faster and without breaking our existing workflow. The time and cost savings, without compromising consistency and at the same time improving quality, was a big factor for us.

Web-based interviews: A useful hiring tool?

HireVue gets a mention in this article on Web-based interviews on HRMorning.com. I think they make a really interesting point:

“These days, more people are willing to relocate to find a good job. That increases HR’s talent pool, but it also makes the interview process more difficult and expensive.”

As the economy picks up I think we’re going to see even more of this. Employees who have settled for jobs they’re not crazy about are going to be more willing to pick up and move for the right job. Smart employers will be looking to take advantage of this to bring on quality talent and HireVue can be a huge enabler of this kind of strategy.

43% of Companies Plan to spend less on Travel in ‘10 According to CareerBuilder’s 2010 US Job Forecast

In addition to an expected 20% growth increase in hiring in 2010, many employers are looking for ways to make up for lost ground from the recession. One key trend looks to be continued cost cutting in employment related business travel. “While employers are inching away from cost containment and more into growth,” the report says, “one area they still plan to save money on is business travel. Forty-three percent of employers say that in their organizations there will be less business travel in 2010 than in 2009.” Read more about the CareerBuilder 2010 US Job Forecast.

Many of our clients are finding that they save between 5 and 10 times what they spend on HireVue, much of that in travel related expenses. We often work with our clients on their hiring plans to help them consider where video interviewing will have the most impact. The results usually include a full ROI study. Webcam Interviews: How to Survive and Thrive

By: Patrick J. Kiger

A long time ago, in a galaxy far, far away, a strong resume and sterling qualifications could have easily landed you a face-to-face meeting with a hiring manager. Today, if your electronic resume passes muster with a company’s keyword search algorithm, you may find yourself trying to make a good impression not in person, but via Webcam from your living room.

Discouraged? Don’t be. With a few tricks drawn from the videographer’s trade, you’ll be armed with the tools you need to keep your foot firmly planted in the door.

Even before the downturn, recruiters had started using online video interviews as a way to speed up and systematize the hiring process. But what was once viewed as trendy gadgetry is now increasingly seen as a tool for slashing recruiters’ expenses.

HireVue Featured on Fox News Today

Fox News discussed video interviewing today in their regular segment “On The Job Hunt,” and mentioned HireVue – reporting that HireVue’s Video Interview Technology customers are seeing 3 to 10 X savings by using HireVue. You can watch the Fox News: On the Job Hunt report here.

We’re excited to see reports like this because they show how video interviewing is becoming mainstream. Network news is pretty limited on the amount of information they can provide in short segments like this. So in addition to their discussion of the obvious benefit of travel cost savings I wanted to add a little more context.

Don’t get me wrong, I don’t mean to marginalize travel cost savings – it’s a HUGE reason companies use video interviewing, but there are so many other aspects  that can pack a far more powerful punch. Take for instance the efficiency gains that can be realized in the hiring process. One client of ours recently informed us after doing an ROI study that just the aspect of video interviewing reducing manager’s time spent in interviews meant a 2.5 to 1 savings over travel cost savings alone!

The report focused pretty heavily on free services such as Skype. It’s important for enterprise employers to understand that these services can work well for one-off interviews but they’re not meant to support high volume, high impact hiring. Not only can they be difficult for employers to support both in terms of interview logistics and technical support but they are not built to the stringent data security requirements most enterprise organizations need – let alone those required by Safe Harbor legislation in the U.S. and E.U.

Another area to consider is the benefits candidates get from video interviewing. Candidates sometimes share their appreciation for video interviewing with us – here are some of the sentiments we’ve heard:

• “I can do the interview when I’m available and don’t have to try to hide it from my boss.”
• “There’s no travel needed to keep the interview process moving forward.”
• “I don’t have to burn vacation time.”
• “I get to tell my story once and can rest assured it will be heard by the right people.”
• “I can uniquely explain my value in a way my resume can’t.”
• “I spent less time in my search interviews so neither I nor the employer had to spend unnecessary time once we knew there wasn’t a fit.”
• “It’s easy to use.”
• “I got to keep the webcam!”
• “I was able to learn so much more about the company through the introductory video that was played before my interview.”

Whether done by HireVue or another provider, we think video interviews will continue to play a significant role in the future of recruiting and don’t be surprised if you start seeing more reports like this. We see a lot of evidence of growth having facilitated interviews in more than 100+ countries in 2009 for companies like AT&T, CDW, Raytheon, PNC Bank and many others. Companies just need to decide what’s critical to them. If travel costs are the only concern a free service like Skype can work well, but if complexity in the hiring process, data security and an improved hiring experience for candidates and hiring managers are more important, a service like HireVue which is built specifically to address enterprise hiring concerns may be a better fit.

HireVue Secures Funding Anchored by Peterson Ventures

Funding will accelerate international growth and product innovation

SALT LAKE CITY, Utah – (Business Wire) September 28, 2009 – HireVue, the leading provider of video interviewing solutions, announced today that it has secured a Series A round of funding led by Peterson Ventures. Peterson Ventures is joined by The Garber Fund of Penn State University and a number of strategic investors to help fund HireVue’s continuing growth.

In the past 12 months, HireVue has experienced greater than 500% growth in interviews and expanded their customer base to include a number of the Fortune 500 including Dish Network, CDW, and Murphy Oil. HireVue also recently announced a key strategic partnership that makes their video interviewing solutions available to thousands of employers through talent management software giant Taleo. HireVue was also named HR Product of the Year for 2009 by Human Resource Executive ® magazine just two weeks ago.

“This is a great time to invest in HireVue,” said Brandon Cope of Peterson Ventures. “It’s exciting to partner with a company in this stage of explosive growth. They provide an offering that is quite compelling for employers given the advancement in technology, the globalization of business, and the downturn of the economy.  We believe HireVue will create value for the world’s leading organizations by helping them acquire their most important asset—their people—in the shortest amount of time and at the lowest cost.”

Employers use HireVue to screen candidates with Virtual Video Interviews where the employer defines a set of questions that are answered by the candidate over the Internet via webcam. Clients also use HireVue’s Live Video Interviews to interview candidates via online videoconference. Both types of interviews are recorded and stored in HireVue’s proprietary and secure system for review. Interviews can be taken from any location with an Internet connection and many employers set up on-site video kiosks for high volume hiring. Webcams and technical support are included with every video interview. The HireVue solution can be used directly from www.hirevue.com or through the newly announced integration with Taleo Enterprise.

HireVue will use the new funds to add to its world-class management team, strengthen market awareness, and make product enhancements that will greatly increase the value of the HireVue system to the market.

“We are fortunate to have Peterson Ventures and the Garber Fund as partners,” says HireVue CEO Mark Newman. “All of our investment partners offer much more than capital. In the few short months of partnership, their entrepreneurial know-how, expertise in the human capital space, and experience in building great companies, has already proven crucial to our recent growth and will continue be a catalyst to our future growth.”

Workforce Management – Reception Remains Lukewarm to Video Resumes

Patrick Kiger wrote a phenomenal piece on video in the hiring process over at Workforce Management

The article supports the basic premise we preach – video resumes useless, video interviews are where companies drive value through cost savings, time savings, and process improvement.

GigaOM – Five Reasons to Move Your Startup Out of Silicon Valley

Howard Anderson, founder of The Yankee Group, a cofounder of Battery Ventures, and a professor of business at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology published a great article today on GigaOM about the merits of moving companies out of the Silicon Valley area.

When it comes to workforce planning, cost isn’t necessarily the only issue that comes in to play and Howard makes some great points about moving to Boston; Pittsburgh; Philadelphia; Austin; Research Triangle, N.C.; Minneapolis; Tallahassee; Toronto; and Basking Ridge, N.J or any number of other places.

You can read the article on GigaOm. There are five great reasons to move, to quote Mr. Anderson:

1. The weather sucks in some of these towns (not Tallahassee) so your people will actually work instead of bugging out at 5:15 to train for a marathon, triathlon or Ultimate Frisbee.

2. You can recruit better outside the fishbowl. Every technology company hits the wall — some multiple times. In the Valley your employees will bail at the first sign of trouble and jump to a better job in the next parking lot. That means you will have to spike salaries to rebuild your team. Other places in the world aren’t quite so spoiled – or they come to you already cynical and stay through the rough times.

3. You won’t get lost in the startup maze. In the Valley, every VC has a portfolio company in each flavor – their own LP’s can’t tell them apart.

4. In my experience, other startup communities aren’t as pre-occupied with the ‘exit’ as da Valley. SV VC’s have attention spans measured in picoseconds and will sell/merge your company at the first sign of trouble. I can say that in Boston, at least, we are used to gutting out long winters.

5. Academics make great board members. Each of these cities has a rich educational environment and are great places to recruit sartorial advisors. And unlike at Stanford, you wont have to give up 1 percent of your equity just to put the provost’s name on your board!

Mr. Anderson has a wealth of experience in this arena and brings up some valid points. When it comes to workforce planning and subsequent recruitment, loyalty, work ethic/habits, and accessibility all matter. Great article!

For startups, not all Ruby on Rails, Java, C#, Business Development gurus, and fundraisers are in the valley!

A site like BountyJobs is appealing because it can help big companies manage all of their different recruiters in one place, while also reducing some of the recruiting hassle for smaller start-ups, too. The company says it fills thousands of jobs annually, and that its revenue has been doubling for six consecutive quarters.
